Questionable spelling not flagged (2002 SP 2)

Why is it when I open a saved Word document to add something to it, Word no longer flags questionable spellings with the wavy red underline?

First, check the settings under Tools>Options>Spelling&Grammar. The setting "Hide spelling errors in this document" is document-specific and if you open someone else's document, this might be ticked. Otherwise, Word sometimes stops checking if the document is incredibly long. Or if the language is set to "No proofing." That can be checked by pressing Shift+F1, clicking a suspicious word, and seeing whether it has "Do not check spelling or grammar" set under its Language settings. And generally Word doesn't start checking until you make some change to the document (even inserting a space will refresh its spell check). Hope its one of these...

Something else I noticed. Word doesn't flag spelling errors in a footnote until you make a change to the text of the document.
