Printing Word documents cutting off (Word 2000 SP-3)

When printing Word documents, sometimes a page will be cut off about 2 1/2 or 3 inches from the bottom of the page -- even if it is in the middle of a line of text. Margins are set at 1 inch top and bottom. It happens in a random way. It can be all the pages of a 16 page document or only one of the pages. The same document will print fine later. Some of the computers that have this problem have background printing on, some don't. They all print to HP printer in the 4000 family. Any suggestions? Thanks

Is the printer defined to use PCL or PS?

Using PCL with either the PCL 6 or 5e driver

Well, that shoots my hunch. I've had wierd printing problems using PS drivers with HP printers. Switching back to PCL solved them.

I wonder if there's a problem with the memory or storage media in the printer itself? I've never heard of this one before (usually print driver problems are repeatable).

We upped the memory to 16 but that didn't help. Do you think it needs to be higher?

I don't know anything about the internal workings of printers. Is there a way to run a diagnostic test on it?

If there are documents that evidence the problem repeatedly, do they print normally to PDF (e.g., using Acrobat or another print-to-PDF product)?

Re: Printing Word documents cutting off (Word 2000 SP-3)

I just had this very problem last night (and have had it before) (in Word 2000). In fact, I posted last night under the title "Bottom of page cut off" (or something like that). It's quite variable as you say, sometimes working and sometimes not. Last night, at first it displayed in Print Preview as being cut off and also printed that way. Then it printed fine but continued to display cut off in Print Preview. Finally, when I came in today and looked at the document, it was fine in Print Preview and printed fine. So it changes from moment to moment.

I talked to one of our systems people here at my firm and she said several people have had printer driver problems (but not this specific problem that you and I had). Normally, we use HP LaserJet 4050 Series PCL 6, but that has caused some people (but not all) problems. Our systems department has tried several drivers, including PCL 5, but the best one they've found is HP LaserJet 4+ on a print server. That driver has solved all problems so far. She just changed me to that driver today.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

Yesterday I found a Beta driver on the HP website that was listed as a way to fix this problem. I loaded it yesterday and will let you know if it works. If it doesn't I'll try the LaserJet 4+. Have you lost any functionality with that driver?

Our systems department says there have been no problems so far with the 4+ driver. Thanks for the tip about the Beta driver. I'll let our people know.

    [20 minutes later]
I just mentioned the Beta driver to our systems department and they're wondering if there's a name or more specifics you can give us so we can get it too. Thanks.

Re: Printing Word documents cutting off (Word 2000 SP-3)

Here is what I found on a Google news board:

Although the 4100 has generally seemed immune to these problems, there is
definitely a conflict between Word 2002 and the HP drivers for certain
LaserJets. Windows drivers don't cause the problems, but they also don't
offer access to all the features. You might check to see if there is a beta
driver for the 4100 at http://www.hp.com/pond/ljbeta/index.html, as other
users have reported that these drivers solve the margin problems.

The only thing to keep in mind is there is no digital signature on the beta drivers. I used the above hyperlink and there was a section of drivers that specifically addresses this margin problem. I installed the beta driver on one of computer that prints either to a 4000 or a 4050 and so far so good.

Thanks. I'll pass this along to our systems department.
