Test your popup blocker software

PopupTest.com has a collection of common and uncommon popup tests to stress out your popup blocker. It also lists most, possibly all, known popup blockers, and rates and describes each one, with download and/or author/vendor links. (Courtesy FileWeek from WebAttack)

Guess I should check out the competition since my blocker, Popup Manager, let thru a few and rates only 3 stars (from 5). But I might wait until I run into real sites that can step around it (so far none).

Re: Test your popup blocker software

The Google Toolbar 2.0 beta has a Popup Blocker which works fairly well, though I couldn't find it mentioned on WebAttack. On that site, the Search engine Could Do With Improvement, and it would be nice to be able to sort in descending order of rating, for example.

(And if UK readers should come across the program called ARSCLIP (I kid you not!) please Be Careful!)

Hi John

Just curious........what's to "Be Careful" about concerning Arsclip.
It's recommended by Lockergnome and can also be found on WebAttack (4 stars) and Nonags (5 ducks).

Have a Great day!!!

A little more info re Arsclip.........
It's written by the folks at Ars Technica.
For more of their free software go to Arsware. Lots of kool toys here to keep a download junkie busy for a while. You can find Arsclip in the "Utilities" section.

Re: Test your popup blocker software

Sorry, Ken, that comment was a bit esoteric. It related to a four-letter Anglo-Saxon word which has an "e" at the end, and roughly translates into American as a more rude version of butt or ass. For some reason I had forgotten the Latin word "Ars", meaning "Art".

If you have to explain a pun, it rather loses its amusement value (if any), doesn't it?

Re: Test your popup blocker software

Hi John

No problem....I understood the pun, but still thought there might be some practical reason to be careful.
Of course, it does provide an excuse to let the mind wander........let's see now....what other titles might be appropriate....

Compression program - Tight ***
Cookie cleaner - *** Wipe
Game - *** Kong ( OK, that's not in line )

Either that, or a transfer to Scuttlebutt to be in company with <!post=A minor oversight...,280755>A minor oversight...<!/post>

Re: Test your popup blocker software

Interesting site, thanks! Between Avant Browser's built-in popup blocker and Proxomitron's filtering I was still hit with four or so popups, but they were of the more exotic varieties. Luckily though, in the normal course of browsing I am pretty well insulated from the onslaught, and Proxomitron should be able to be 'taught' how to block the few that did get through.

Using Firebird 0.6 - w/ native PuB, blocked all but the mouse-over and the drop-down from the less common set.

Re: Test your popup blocker software

When I looked at the Google Toolbar, the only install choice I found was "web-installed"...

Is there any way to d/l the toolbar to allow for offline installation?

Regards,
