    Unwanted Messages

I had placed a comment in the last several days about messages popping up on my screen -- even with Norton AntiVirus AND ZoneAlarm running...

I just received a reply from the people at Zone Labs, and thought it may be of interest to others:

    >>There is a known exploit that is seen with Windows NT, Windows 2000
and Windows XP. The exploit is that anybody can pop up a message on
any computer running the above versions of windows. This type of
traffic can not be filtered by a firewall as it is just regular
network traffic. However, there is a fix. All you need to do is
disable the messenger service which loads on startup. You can do
this by going to control panel -> administrative tools -> services ->
messenger. Click the stop button and set it to manual load, instead
    of automatic.

That will most likely prevent those popups from being seen.
    <<

    Interesting...

    Chuck Billow

    Re: Unwanted Messages

I disabled messaging services on my home network (W2k) and it was totally ineffective.
I haven't found a firewall that will stop it and disabling messenger was NOT the answer for me.

    Re: Unwanted Messages

I was not. My son had installed a small firewall to supplement our hardware firewall and ZoneAlarm didn't come onto our horizon at the time.
We are running a Wireless network now and it seems to have truncated the number of these messages that I receive.
There were as many as 5-10 daily and we hardly have that each week now.

Maybe the comment is/was product specific...?

It sounds like you need to run Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and Spybot http://security.kolla.de/ to rid yourself of some spyware calling home. If that doesen't solve the problem go to http://www.pcflank.com/index.htm and run their tests to see where you are open to attack. Good luck.

    Re: Unwanted Messages

Have you disabled the "Alerter" service or "Remote Registry Service" and possibly "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager"? One of these may be part of the problem. You may need the last one so be aware if something doesn't work after you disable it or perhaps move it to manual status first and see if is started by anything.
