Can't restore Word Window (Word 97)

My installation of Word 97 will only show on-screen as a maximized window. If I try to 'restore down' to a smaller-sized window, Word disappears entirely. Excel was doing the same thing, but it got fixed after re-installing my video drivers--Word's behavior didn't change. I have tried all possible resolution settings and each one has the same problem. I uninstalled Office and re-installed it, and the exact same problem persists. Is there a place in the registry that can be edited to fix this? Or does anyone know of anything else to try?

After you restore it can you right click an empty area of the start bar and choose to Tile Windows Horizontally?

Does this make the window visible and not maximised?

no, that doesn't work.

I just got it fixed, and then lost it again. I'm using a dual-head video adapter. All had worked just fine until about a month ago when this problem came up. I've tried virtually every combination of dual monitor settings and nothing worked until a few minutes ago, when I made a change and all of a sudden Word started working correctly again (I'm sure I've tried this same setting before). But, that setting caused Adobe Premiere to disappear, so I made another change that brought Adobe Premiere back, but now Word is disappearing again.

I guess I'll just have to keep working with the various combinations of monitor and resolution settings and see if I can get everything to work at the same time.

(Edited by jscher2000 on 05-Aug-03 22:21. Just a note that if the window is maximized, this either will do nothing or cause an error.)
A couple months back we had a thread about using a tiny bit of VBA code to position the Word window across the magical space-time continuum of dual monitors. I don't remember the upshot of that, but while you still can see Word, you could create and save a new macro in your Normal template and, using Tools>Customize...>Keyboard..., assign it to Ctrl+Alt+Shift+1 (or something like that):

Sub PositionTopLeft()
With ActiveWindow
.Top=1
.Left=1
End with
End Sub

Something like this should work if Word is active (toolbar button selected) even if you can't see it. If you experiment with the .Left coordinate, you probably could create a second macro (CTrl+Alt+Shift+2 ?) that would put you upper left on the second monitor. Or you might repeatedly crash your system. I've never played with two monitors, so this is all speculation. Have fun.

I'll give that a try, but for now, I actually got it working again--it must have been a combination of re-installing the drivers and then hitting the right combination of dual settings, because I had tried these settings before with no luck.

Re: Can't restore Word Window (Word 97)

I heard recently that Word (in all versions, even 2003) has problems with multi-monitor support, and that they are trying to fix them.

A problem that comes up especially often is that the "Find/Replace" dialog creates a phantom document window that hides the document. But there seem to be other bugs, too.
