NTFS Compression effect on LAN performance

    Hi,

When a 10Gb share is NTFS compressed, what performance effect is there on LAN performance?

Should NTFS compression be avoided alogether & instead investment made in getting more Server disk space?

    Thanks,

    m.q.

Re: NTFS Compression effect on LAN performance

I've always advised against disk compression of any kind, in any format, unless you have a spare 1GB disk you're using for backup purposes.

Compression may not degrade your LAN performance, but it will degrade your SYSTEM performance, as it requires more steps to uncompress and then access the data, than it would to just access the data. My take on compression is that it requires far more resources to get what you need from a compressed system. If you've compressed your server, you'd most likely notice a decline in LAN speed as a result.

    Hope that helps!
