    Unless you're prepared to have the person's name in a separate cell - which is likely to cause all sorts of spacing issues - you would need to have VBA code to get the result you're seeking. If that is not too complicated for your user, please post back and we should be able to do something.

    Thanks for the prompt reply. I can knock something up in VBA if necessary, I was just hoping there would be a way of doing it through the UI so that the user could do it himself.

    There is no way to format part of a cell containing a formula, whether interactively or using VBA. You can use VBA to store the result of a formula in a cell as a value, and then format part of it.

    This has been one of my major peeves with excel (that and custom data labels). Lotus 123 2.3 w/ WYSIWYG allowed this a decade ago (and the datalabels is in even older versions). At least the datalabels can be done with addins and macros.

    There is NO "good way" (i guess with the exception of using some worksheet change event) to have a live formula with formatting in excel.
