Import Data from Excel (MS Project 2000)

In Project 2000, you can insert multiple MS project files into 1 to create a global view of projects. The source files for the individual MS project files can be updated in a separate location or in the global view and changes are automatically updated to the global MS Project file. I am trying to do the same with MS Excel files, but want to avoid having to manually import the map each time someone updates an individual excel file. Any thoughts on how to do this? I would appreciate anyone's input. Thanks!

What do you mean you are trying to do the same with Excel files? Are you trying to track updates using linked excel spreadsheets similar to imbedded projects in MS project or are you trying to use excel to update project and you want the data to update the correct inserted MS Project project?

Hi Gary - I am trying to track updates using linked excel spreadsheets similar to imbedded projects in MS project. Sorry for the confusion...

You can do this in excel using links or Paste Links or other methods, however, you would have to maintain all of the links. In addition, if using links, the links must be able to attach to the file, so if running on a network, the files need to be saved to the network for the links to refresh.

You could also imbed objects (such as a different excel file, word, etc) into a current file to see data as well.

You might want to post a question in the excel forum to get additional ideas as this truly is not a MS Project question.

Thanks for the response, Gary! The main file of the document that I am trying to create is MS Project - I want the source data to come from an excel spreadsheet and auto-import into MS Project when the excel spreadsheets are updated; however you brought up a good point. I will try posting this in the excel board also in case anyone has experience in exporting the excel data to Project. Thanks again! <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

Automatically updating data from excel can be challenging to do, especially the way you are trying to automate it. It will also depend on what data you are trying to automatically link to. If you are familiar with the MS Project database tables, you could essentially link to the excel data behind the scenes in MS Project but it takes a while to learn how to do this and you will need to be very proficient in databases and programming as well as have to understand how exactly MS Project works.

I dont know if this helps, but if you are serious, I would suggest going to the MS Knowledgebase and see if you can find the white paper or the detailed review on MS Project fields.

    Good Luck.
