Windows 2000

How do you cascade or tile two folders/files in Win 2K and Office 2000 so that you can compare contents of the folders/files?

HI, Amgarden ~

Open 2 instances of Windows Explorer, right-click your taskbar and select 'Tile Windows Vertically', then navigate to the file or folder on each side to compare.

If you have other apps running, close them or minimize all windows first, then click on each Windows Explorer taskbar button before tiling or you will end up tiling all your windows rather than only the 2 you want.

A neat little utility called Twofer does what you want, ie two copies of Win Explorer side by side. Someome in The Lounge recommended it and I downloaded it on July 15 2003, but I cannot find the original post. Perhaps whoever posted it will see this and post the link again.

Thats because it was in Woodys Office Watch:

By the way... I never use Windows Explorer. I use Twofer, Vince
Chen's brilliant, free utility that puts two copies of Windows
Explorer up on the screen, so you can copy and move stuff around
without getting stuck in folder expansion hell. It's one of those
really amazing utilities that you can't live without. Over the
years I've tried it on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4, and 2000, and it
works like a champ.

Thanks for the replies. I had read in one of Woody's Office or Windows watch about the utility and how to cascade, but I had forgotten how to do it. Many thanks for the posts.

Mike,

I tried that link on your post and didn't see any mention of twofer on it. Is it not the right one or am I just not seeing it?

Re: Windows 2000

Bob--

What a bear. That link no longer gets it even shortening it. Searching ZD comes up zip. I found Twofer for you but it was not easy. If you google it for a while, you'll only find Woody's original newsletter mentioning it. The problem with ZD Net is that they don't archive their downloads well, and many fall by the wayside so that when you use Woody's old link, it's not their and searching ZD is hard, and I've referred people to ZD/PC Mag downloads only to get back a grrrrr....it's not there or it's not free--because now ZD charges--even so--you can't find some downloads from say 3 years ago like this one.

So....

Download Twofer *Scroll Down two thirds of way to get to it

I went further. Since it said for up to NT--I downloaded it to try it on an XP SP1--to spare you problems. It works fine. I haven't had time to play with all the features.

Thread knocking around possible need for Twofer and Double Explorer--a little rap mentioning twofer

Let me know how you like using it.

Notes for Twofer (with download)

"TWOFER, for two-paned Windows Explorer windows.
Requires Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.

================================================== ================
Twofer is a free utility available exclusively from www.pccomputing.com.
Twofer starts two copies of Windows Explorer, allowing you to hunt and
peck and scroll to your heart's content.

To use Twofer, run TwoferSetup.exe and you'll see two Windows Explorer
windows (you may have to move them around a little to see them both),
and a small window marked Twofer Setup.

Start with the leftmost Explorer window - the "A" window. Resize the
window so it takes up much of the left side of your screen. Then
navigate to a useful starting directory. When you're happy with
the location and starting directory of the "A" window, click Save A.

Similarly, resize the "B" window and set its starting directory.
When it looks right, click Save B.

Close down the Explorer "A" and "B" windows, and the Twofer Setup window.
You're ready to run Twofer. Create a Desktop shortcut to twofer.exe by
clicking on the file and dragging it to the Desktop. Better, if
you're using Internet Explorer 4.0, put Twofer on the Windows Taskbar
by clicking and dragging twofer.exe onto the Taskbar.

Hi SMBP,

Thanks for all that research and digging to find twofer. I really do appreciate it.

You're right they did "bury" that file. However. I downloaded it and it installed OK. I set up the two windows fine, just haven't had a chance to give it a workout yet. Looks good tho. again

One of several ways to get a Double Pane Explorer in Windows XP and Windows in General:

To make a folder open up in a double pane view, while in Explorer, if you click a folder once, then hold down the Shift key while you double-click it, you will open the folder with a two-pane Explorer view

Double Explorer 3.7

Apologies. Since I downloaded it so recently I assumed it would still be on that site. Thanks to SMBP for finding another source.

Hi, SMBP ~

Your first example.....does that translate into the tree pane on the left and the folder contents pane on the right?

Re: Windows 2000

That link was in the Software forum thread <!post=Twofer,274193>Twofer<!/post>. I found it when looking for the link to FolderBox, also discussed in that thread. It's different, but can be used similarly to Twofer, and can be accessed in IE. I find both useful, but tend to use FolderBox more often.

Bruce--

If you mean Twofers--yes it does. Download Baxbex's Folderbox, though, because it's going to give you more features to work with. I am not sure, given all the ways you know to tweak the views on Explorer that if you tiled it, you get more than just a little convenience using Twofers--the fun was finding the thing--but I want to compare both of them and I think Tim already has taken plenty of time to do that--and probably on that old thread. I have Folderbox which you can use or put out of the view if you want--and be careful, because I was trying to find Folderbox for you and I accidentally typed in "www.babex.com" instead of "baxbex" and ohmagosh! what jumped out on the big screen--I'm still trying to look up and figure out what that was.

Hi, SMBP ~

No, I was referring to:

To make a folder open up in a double pane view, while in Explorer, if you click a folder once, then hold down the Shift key while you double-click it, you will open the folder with a two-pane Explorer view
