    IE stops Win Explorer from coming up after restart (IE6 SP1)

    Howdy all. This problem happens after IE6 SP1 is installed on 98SE, M.E., and W2K Pro. M.E. is on my laptop, the other two as a dual boot on my desktop. Basically, I've always preferred to leave Win Explorer running, so it's already there when I reboot or restart. After going to IE6 SP1, on all three Windows setups, no more auto explorer. Granted, it's a rather trivial problem, but I just gotta know!! :-} Any ideas why?? Thanks,
    Mike.

    I think this is more of an operating system issue. Did you have a shortcut to Win Explorer in your startup folder? Otherwise, I don't know why you would have it as an active application when you rebooted. In any event, you could put a shortcut in the startup folder.

    That solution should be fine. I wonder what the mechanism was that was previously used to have Explorer running -- and I suspect it was the same! However, I don't see how upgrading IE would change that...

    Re: IE stops Win Explorer from coming up after restart (IE6 SP1)

    Thanks for the info. I can't tell ya why it happened, all I can say is that in 98, ME, or W2k - BEFORE I upgraded to IE 6 SP 1 - all I had to do was leave windows explorer running when I shutdown or rebooted, and it was automatically there on bootup. No shortcuts anywhere. As I said, it's rather trivial, but it would be nice to know what caused it.
    Thanks again,
    Mike.

    Re: IE stops Win Explorer from coming up after restart (IE6 SP1)

    According to some posts in the Microsoft newsgroups, there is a Registry setting that restores the old behavior, others report that it doesn't work except in Windows XP (where it can be set in Tools | Folder Options.) You might try it - it won't do harm if it doesn't work.

    The setting is in HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerAdvanced. Create an entry of type DWORD named PersistBrowsers with value 1. If you don't like to use RegEdit, you can create a text file with contents

    <img src=/w3timages/blueline.gif width=33% height=2>

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerAdvanced]
    "PersistBrowsers"=dword:00000001

    <img src=/w3timages/blueline.gif width=33% height=2>

    Rename the text file to have an extension .reg, then open (double click) it.

    Re: IE stops Win Explorer from coming up after restart (IE6 SP1)

    Many thanks Hans. I guess I missed the topic in the MS newsgroups, I'll have to go back and look again. As I said, it's trivial, but when something changes for no apparent reason, I prefer to at least know why. Thanks for the registry suggestion(s).
    Take care,
    Mike.

    Re: IE stops Win Explorer from coming up after res

    Just in case you DO choose to install the Registry Patches, please note that for Win2KPro, you'll need to change the line reading "REGEDIT4" to "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00". The others should be just as HansV said. HTH

    Interesting. I have usually found that the old REGEDIT4 files work fine on Win2K.

    Re: IE stops Win Explorer from coming up after res

    That is surprising. WIndows 2000 is 5.0. (XP is 5.1.) Windows 95 was 4.0. The others were varying flavours of 4.x.

    The syntax is exactly the same, but any files I have ever inadvertently attempted to run with the wrong header have been "bounced".

    I can't verify until Monday -- but I THINK this is true. I will OBVIOUSLY need to look further into this!

    Re: IE stops Win Explorer from coming up after res

    I can merge "old" Windows NT and Windows 95 .reg files (starting with REGEDIT4) without problems in Windows XP Home. I don't know about Windows 2000; it might be that XP has been made more compatible in view of its target audience.

    Same here. Able to write and merge REGEDIT4 reg files w/o incident in XP.

    On the XP Pro machine that I had, I seem to remember it rejecting Regedit4 patches.

    Thanks for the follow up. I am fairly certain that I have Merged MANY .reg files on the Win2K box at work. I have never needed to modify them.

    HOWEVER, one cannot do it the other way around. If you know what I mean!
