    Downloaded Install Fails

I am trying to help a friend download and install a program off the internet. All goes well until she clicks on "Open" following the download. At that point she gets a message something like: "Windows cannot open ... You may not have appropriate permission."

I have had her check all the permissions in the Control Panel, Internet Options, Security and Advanced tabs, and they match one of my computers in which I had successfully downloaded and installed the same program.

Any ideas as to what's blocking the install on her machine?

If she is seeing Open as a choice of what to do with the downloaded program, I take it she is right-clicking on the file in Explorer. If she wants to install the program, why isn't she just double-clicking on the file?

    Re: Downloaded Install Fails

I think you are assuming that she has saved the downloaded file to her hard drive, but that's not the case. The options presented upon completion of a download are "open" or "save." In the case of "open" the program file is not permanently saved, it is opened from its temporary location and immediately installed.

Her problem is that upon selecting "open" her computer informs her that it cannot open it.

    Hi Chuck

Has she tried to Save it to a location that she is certain to have access permission, such as her 'Desktop'. Then try and Open it from there. Is she downloading an 'installer', or the complete program?

Seems to me to always be a good idea to Save any download to a "safe" folder then copying it to a working folder before opening it as you will then have a 'Backup' copy of the download in case the install routine alters the original file.

    Have a Great day!!!

OK, why does she need to Open the file, rather than Save it? And then install the program after the Save is completed?

    Re: Downloaded Install Fails

She doesn't need to open rather than save -- it's simply a choice. Since it is a relatively small program it is no problem to download it again if needed to re-install. Saving it to disk would only save the amount of time required to download. However, I have advised her to try saving it and then installing from the saved version. I haven't heard the results of that yet.
