The Windows Script Host might have a method for this. MS has a section of its site dedicated to all sorts of interesting administrative scripts using WSH (possibly with file names ending WSF). Not sure if there is a Home/Pro difference on what you can expect in the environment.

Open a command window - Then type 'hh ntcmds.chm' (without the apostropehs). See the shutdown command.

Joe, this is one of the most useful help files I have read in months. Who knew the answers to common Lounge questions could be found in here:

<UL><LI>To quickly clear a file association, assoc .xyz=

<LI>To shut down Outlook from the command line, taskkill /im outlook.exe[/list]Not to mention lots of other dangerous stuff. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Could this be one of those little luxuries that is denied to Homies? When I tried to access the file, as per Joe's suggestion, I got the less than helpful "help" shown below. Same result when I located the file and double-clicked on it. I even shut down & disabled the help service, but no joy.

And of course Help & Support fails to deliver if I want to find out about goodies like "assoc" or "taskkill". I can get cmd line help for assoc (with "/?"), but taskkill is "...not recognized as operable program or batch file.".

Yes, I've got Pro, so this might not be applicable to Home. I've also got XOX in various places in my help files, so those might be nonstandard, too. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Tim,
Take a look here: XPH Product documentation. looks like taskill is supposed to be there.

Supposed to be, yes. But still missing from mine, even after I installed the "Support Tools". <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

Maybe someone else with Home can help out and let me know whether I have a unique situation, ie a problem, or whether this is more common?

May I recommend the set of utilities available form Sysinternals called PsTools? I use some of these on a daily basis!

    Yes - I usually put on my admin hat when in the lounge. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
