    New Icon for a folder (XP Home)

    I would like to change the Icon for the Program Files folder so it will stand out when I use File Explorer.
    I thought I could do this with a Rt click and Properties like can be done on the Desktop but can't find the way.
    Is it possible?

    Program Files is one of the system folders; Windows XP doesn't offer customization for those. You can, however, create a text file named Desktop.ini in Program Files, with contents like this, for example:

    [.ShellClassInfo]
    IconFile=%SystemRoot%system32SHELL32.dll
    IconIndex=13

    This means that the icon will be the 13th in Shell32.dll. You can see which icons are available by clicking Change Icon in the properties of a customizable folder. Do so before trying this.

    That's just dandy..... but how do you determine what the number is for each icon? <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Unless you have some sort of resource editor it'll be guesswork. There are several Loungers with a deep bag of utilities, perhaps they can suggest one. If you are really interested, look in the Software finds and Wants forum, and if you don't find anything and don't get a reply here in a day or so, ask over there.

    This is old news now, but if you don't have an icon editor handy, when you open Change Icon dialog box, the icons in a resource file (such as an .EXE or .DLL) are displayed in down, then across, sequence, starting with icon 0 (zero) in upper left corner. For example, in attached screen shot, the highlighted default icon is icon 0, the closed folder is icon 3, the open folder is icon 4, the globe is icon 13, the question mark is icon 23, etc. As recommended, the easiest way to determine icon number is to get a good icon editor. (I use Axialis IconWorkshop but there's lots of free ones.) Just remember the icon editor may list icons as icon 1, icon 2, etc, but the internal index used by Windows is zero-based.
