    hidden bookmarks (97/2k)

i got a file from someone that has hidden bookmarks and they want to know how to modify them. It seems to me that word creates them automatically and they are tied to a heading or something but i am not completely sure. it seems to me that there is no way to modify them besides recreating them but then they are not hidden. is that right?

Word creates certain bookmarks internally that are used for cross-references of various kinds. From what I have read here in the Lounge, you cannot trust that these will remain the same over time so that you can use them for other purposes. If the user wants to "lock in" a particular bookmark in a reliable way, then yes, he or she should create them manually. Hope this helps.

It is also possible to create your own Hidden bookmarks, simply create a bookmark with a name that starts with a _ character.

Aha! Thanks all, that solves the issue.
