Excel files saving as Word document (Excel 2000)

Hi! I have a weird situation where my excel files are saving as some weird version of a word file. The attributes in Windows Explore show it as an XLS File - with an outline of the Word icon. Does anyone know what causes this or how to correct it? I have already tried re-installing office. I did attach a word file with the mysterious icon included. I appreciate your help!

If you open one of these "weird" files from Windows Explorer, do they open normally in Excel? If so, it may be just an icon problem; you might solve it by deleting the icon cache; the exact name of the file depends on your OS, I think; there are others that know more about that than I do.

I seem to remember it being called ShellIconCache in both 95 and NT - which is what it's called in 98 and 2000. I'd be surprised if ME and XP were any different.

    In XP it's called IconCache.db
