I attempted to upgrade win98se to XP Pro and when the computer rebooted I got an error message telling me that there was something wrong with my hard drive and the install was halted. When I rebooted I got the same error message. When I rebooted again, I again got the screen giving the choice between continuing the XP install or boot windows normally. The default is to install XP and it times out after 5 sec and starts the install which fails. While I try to resolve the problem with the drive, I'd really like to be able to turn on the computer and bypass this choice screen and go directly to windows 98. I can not figure out how to turn the screen off.

Did you try, Start windows Normally?

When I select Start Windows Normally, It starts up fine. What I'd like to do is to eliminate the screen asking what I'd like to do. Usually I turn on the computer and go about my business and come back and it's ready to use. Now when I turn it on, I have to wait for the choice screen to come up, select Start Windows Normally and then I can go about my business. This is not a major catastrophe just an irritation.

Disable your screensaver (if you use one), leave your computer on and turn the monitor off. This eliminates all wait time and is, arguably, better for the PC. The electricity usage is about the same as a 100 watt light bulb. <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>

During an installation XP leaves a temporary file(s) in the root folder of your HD. Similar to autoexec.bat or config.sys, so that the install can continue after the automatic reboots occur during the install process.
For the life of me, I can't remember the exact names of the files. ( they may BE autoexec or config ) but you can check for similar filenames with the recent file date of the aborted install. Try renaming them temporarily to see if that stops the screen.
