SCRAP Icon (XP Home SP-1)

And suddenly there is a new icon resident in my System Tray. The icon calls itself a SCRAP OBJECT. A click opens a file called "Corel Notebook Page 1 - SCRAP" after opening the Quattro Pro program. I can find the file scrap.shs under C:.....Applications Data. I've deleted the content of the QUATTRO page so it's empty of data but the icon still comes up on boot. Something must be calling scrap and its icon during boot but I can't find it. So...
I'd like to delete the SCRAP file and remove the call that makes it come up in the first place.
Any thoughts on the matter?

Did you check start | run |" type msconfig" | start ? Look for files mentioning Corel or Quattro and disabling them?

Also check Windows Explorer in the C: Documents & settings, all users, start menu, programs, start up, for shortcuts to anything like that. Delete or rename them to test it out.

Did the above, couldn't find anything. Worried that if I delete the SCRAP icon then something useful will be deleted. Just what does SCRAP.SHS do?

what does SCRAP.SHS do?
---------------------------------------------------

See Cowboys post for what it is.
Delete the icon & you will delete the .shs file also.

Thanks to all. Took the simple route first -- delete the ICON. The machine did not ignite, the screen remained non-blue, and the ICON is no longer visible.

Re: SCRAP Icon (XP Home SP-1)

Ladimer--

You want that scrap iconnette to vamoose from your notification area--Let me count the ways with apologies to Ms. St. Vincent Millay:

These solutions will work:

1) You can probably easily get it out of your sight and it's a harmless file I would think, by just Rt. Click Start>Properties>Taskbar>Customize Button lower right>Customize notifications and just stop it from showing.

KB References:
279771: Description of Notification Area Settings

2) 283084: How to Clear Past Items from the Notification Area

To Delete the Scrap Icon--Either use the regedit in the KB immediately above (you can sure get back anything that's in that notification area now in one minute by configuring the start tab in msconfig and rebooting, or use the regedit below which should be selective or use any of these methods below:

3) Further, Kelly has a tweak on her site:

Remove Past Items From the Notification Area (Line 53)
Kelly's XP Tweaks: Line 53

Once done, Open Task Manager, click the Processes tab, click Explorer.exe,
and then click End Process. In Task Manager, click File, click New Task,
type explorer, and then click OK.

4) Click Start > Run > Regedit

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerTrayNotify

Delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream values.

Open Task Manager, click Processes tab, click Explorer.exe, then click End Process.

Still in Task Manager, click File, click New Task, type explorer, then click OK.

__________________________________________________ __________________________
Also for Control over the Notification Area:

See Customize the Notification area Icon.

You can probably remove it easily with Tray Wizard

You can also use Mike Lin's Tray Saver which provides additional features to manage what is showing in the Notification area. Both are . Mike's site and his downloads are popular with a number of people in the Lounge. No one is reporting problems with it on 2000 or XP that I could find--he lables it up through NT. You also use Mike's Startup Monitor to control notification area crowding in the future. The theory behind notification area appearance is discussed Shell_NotifyIcon Function.

hth,

SMBP
