    Updating Records (2000)

I have about 500 records I need to update. Each cell contains an 8 or 11 alpha/numeric character record, e.g. DEUTDEFF or DEUTDEFF500. I need to update the values in the cells with 8 characters to add three XXX's to the end of each record, e.g. DEUTDEFFXXX, but I'm not sure how to go about this.

Also, could this be done in Access more easily?

    Thanks,

    Scott

I assume that the values are in a column, soy in column A, starting in cell A1.
If necessary, insert an empty column to the right of the values.
Enter the following formula in cell B1:
    =LEFT(A1 & "XXX", 11)
Fill down as far as needed.
With the cells in column B still selected, copy (Ctrl+C), then Edit | Paste Special... > Values, OK.
You can now move the cells in B over to column A, or delete column A.

If you're familiar with Excel VBA, you can create a macro to update the values.

In Access, you could create an update query to do this. Slightly easier, because an update query works "in place".

Thanks! That worked like a champ.
