    Numbering Tables and Figures (XP)

    I am using captions (Insert|Reference|Caption) to automatically number tables and figures. For some reason EVERY figure/table is "1". Actually, it is Chapter #-1, since I am including chapter numbers in the numbering scheme. THAT part is working properly. The author of this document wants each caption number to be centered with the text of the caption centered directly below that. Could my problem be stemming from using the SHIFT+Enter (which I'm doing to enter the two lines of text in the caption dialog box) to enable the generation of the TOC? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

    If you right click one of these captions, and select Toggle Field Codes, you will see the field code between curly brackets { }. What does this field code look like? You can copy the text between the brackets and paste it into a reply (don't select the brackets themselves).

    Thanks for responding so quickly!

    The first one in the chapter looks like this: { STYLEREF 8 s }-{ SEQ Figure * ARABIC s 8 }

    The second one, which is correct looks like this: { STYLEREF 8 s }-{ SEQ Figure * ARABIC s 8 }

    The third one, which says Figure II-1 is here: { STYLEREF 8 s }-{ SEQ Figure * ARABIC s 8 }

    I sure don't see any difference. I've tried updating fields, using the format painter, re-inserting the caption, and just about everything else I can think of EXCEPT whatever will fix it. <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

    The s 8 in the field code means that numbering will restart at 1 after each paragraph formatted as Heading 8. Perhaps you should either change the number, or remove the s 8 switch. Test on a copy of the document!

    After modifying the field codes, turn off field codes, select the document (Ctrl+A) and update all fields (F9).

    Thank you! It worked. I don't understand why it happened in the first place. The ONLY place that there is a Heading 8 is on the Chapter cover page. I even did a search for that style!?!?!? Oh well, at least you gave me a fix.

    Thanks again!
