    Help!

I have a Dell Inspiron 3700 laptop. Came with Win98-2nd edit. Upgraded to ME. For the past day, computer freezes at Startup. I have tried Scandisc, Disc Defrag, System Restore. Nothing works. A screen came on suggesting reinstalling Windows. The only problem is that the computer starts only in Safe Mode. Safe Mode does not recognize the CD drive. I am willing to start from scratch; reinstall Windows 98 and then upgarde to ME. I am willing to reformat the hard drive but I've never done anything like this before. What steps do i take to reformat? Would I need to install more than Windows if I reformat? We're leaving on vacation in a few days and I need the computer!
I thank you for any type of help.

    Re: Help!

By the way I have a Dell Inspiron 3700 laptop myself that my wife uses. If you need more personal help, PM me. If you have a second computer I can walk you through it. I have done it many times.

I do have a question. Did you install anything new right before this happened? If so go into Safe Mode and uninstall it and reboot.

    Hi Alan-

This may help to add to some other good sites. There are step by steps with screen shots:

    Rescuing the Drowning ME Computer

If only you could get to Windows--you could use the Runbox and type in "scanreg /restore" which is often more effective than System Restore in ME. You would lose the quotes, and put a space after scan /reg and it often works well. It defaults to 5 restore points, but can be loaded to contain 99.

    Good luck,
