    Registry Characters

When I export the registry and then try to read it with a text editor (Textpad) I get an error that there are characters that are not part of the ANSI set...

When I opened it in Wordpad, I get a bunch of symbols which o course represent the non-printable characters...

Doesn't the Win2K registry export to a text file like Win98?

    Re: Registry Characters

The registry files themselves are binary and not viewable or editable except via REGEDIT or programmatically
    I found this <A target="_blank" HREF="http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win32/docs/reg_intro.html">MS Windows 9x/NT/2000 Support

    Cowboy:

I knew you couldn't (ever) edit the reg files directly... but you could export them and end up with a text file, that could in fact be later imported if need be, and read directly using a text viewer or editor...

But I am getting all kinds of extended characters in the export now...

    Is this "normal"?

    Chuck

    Re: Registry Characters

I have never tried to read them after I backed them up. Sorry.

    Re: Registry Characters

    Give it a shot...

Go to reedit, then 'Registry' then 'Export Registry File' then make sure it's the whole (all) registry, give it a name, and 'OK'...

This changes nothing... It just is (was) a means of backup...

Try to look at your new file with a text editor, and tell me what you get...

    Re: Registry Characters

    OK, here's the scoop:

If I pull it into Word, it goes through conversion...

Plain text, Unicode UTF-7 and Unicode UTF-8 all give me garbage, but PLAIN Unicode gives me a readable file...

    What does THIS mean?

    Regards,
    Chuck

    Re: Registry Characters

CW I really have never dealt with this before. As for your registry being messed up I wouldn't think so, cause if it was you would be having some big problems. Your AV shouldn't have anything to do with your ability to read with NotePad something you backed up.Have you tried just backing up say, one Key and see what happens. Maybe it's getting corrupted during the Export. What are you backing it up to? I backed mine up to My Documents and opened with NotePad. I am running WinXP which shouldn't be any different then Win2000 when it comes to reading the files.

    Re: Registry Characters

It must have something to do with the Encoding. Maybe WinXP converts it for me and Win2000 does not with out some help. As you did with word. Why is it that your trying to read it after an Export?

    Re: Registry Characters

I wasn't trying initially.. just saving it. Till I couldn't, and then....

    But now I can...

I took everything out of memory, tried it, got garbage, restarted (again) tried it again, and it worked...

Must have had something frying something somewhere...

    Sorry for the bother...

But see, now you learned something too...

    Chuck
