Heading 2 and heading 3 on same line (Word 2000)

I've attached a short sample document which I hope will make my question clear.

How do you put Heading 2 and Heading 3 on the same line, as shown under "2. Introduction" in the attached? The subpoints (i) and (ii) are subpoints of (a), but I need (i) to appear on the same line as (a).

    We're using Word 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3) on Windows 2000 Professional, Version 5.0.2195, Service Pack 3, Build 2195.

You can't do this using automatic numbering in Word 2000.

Word 2002 has introduced a Style Separator which allows you do place run-in headings (more easily than the kludge that is otherwise required) but I would be surprised if it went as far as doing what you require.

The two options I can see are:
    1. Use a two column table but hide the borders. In the first cell goes a Heading 1 with no text and in the next cell goes a Heading 2
    2. Use fields for the second level numbering rather than automatic numbering

Style separators in Word 2002 allow you to put two paragraphs with different styles on one line, but they won't do what Russ wants. The second paragraph won't show bullets or numbering. So even in Word 2002, it's better to use one of your suggestions.

Thanks, Andrew and Hans. Nice idea with the 2-column-table. I'm not very well-acquainted with Fields. How would you make it work using them?

Ask the Answer Wizard about the ListNum and Seq fields.
