I don't have any experience distributing shareware (or, if I do, I don't have any experience receiving payments). But I think if you have visited enough sites, you get the idea of which look reputable and which do not. You want the user to have confidence in your product, and thus a site that is completely nonselective and gives everything high ratings probably won't earn much trust. On the other hand, some distribution is better than none. At the point that you allow someone else to take money on your behalf, I think it gets more difficult. From the payment processing angle, I've purchased through random odd card processors, but I always try to check them out before entering my card number.
