    Word freezes when opening

    Using Word 97, SR1

I'm having a problem that Word freezes and locks up the computer when I open it from the Start menu--I have to do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to recover. However Word does execute normally if I double click on a Word document.

I've been troubleshooting the problem using
    http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/Q181/4/71.ASP
WD97: How to Reset User Options and Registry Settings

This is what I have done and the results:
    1) Starting Word with the shift key: Still freezes
    2) Starting Word with /A: Word opens normally
    3) Rename the normal template: still freezes (I'm
moved all the templates out of the startup directory
and renamed all of the normal.dot files)
    4) Delete the data key in the registry: Word opens
normally one time; thereafter it freezes when opened
    5) Run setup using /Y: Didn't help

The computer staff also reinstalled Word, and that didn't help. I also changed the file extension on my only *.wll file, and that didn't help.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks

    Hi Brian:

You seemed to have checked most of the problem sources. However, you say that you can open Word with the /a switch. Do you have any add-ins besides the one .wll file? Look both in Tools/Templates & add-ins & also in "C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftAddIns" (your path may differ). You might try searching on the Microsoft KB site for eraser 97. Do a complete erase & then reinstall. Wish I had an easy fix for you.

    Hi Brian,

Are you certain that the extension was actually changed on the *.wll file?

If you don't have the file extensions turned on and rename a file w/extension, the original file extension is preserved. For example if you had EZPhoto.wll and changed the extension it could actually be named EZPhoto.bad.wll and will still attempt to load on startup.

Also, try deleting/renaming the Data key *and* renaming Normal.dot then see if Word starts.

    BAM and Phil,

    Thanks for the replies.

I renamed the .wll file with an extension of .~wll, so I am assuming that it is out of commission. Phil suggested to check for other add-ins other than the one .wll file. I'm primarily an Excel user (and the add-ins are .xla files), are all Word add-ins .wll files or what extensions should I be looking for? (There was only one .wll file on my c: drive.)

I'm pretty sure I tried deleting the data key and renaming the normal.dot file at the same time, but I can try it again. If that works, I'll post back tomorrow that the problem was resolved.

    Thanks,

    Brian

    Re: Word freezes when opening

    Hi Brian:

Don't look for extensions. Look for anything in the Word startup folder. Either rename everything with, say, by adding "old" after the extension (making sure that extensions are turned on as BAM suggested) or remove everything from the startup group. You can also have add-ins that you've added separately (e.g. WOPR). e.g. I have a WOPR add-in for Word 2000 that's located in "C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftAddIns".

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. Somehow I resolved the problem.

I moved everything out of the add-ins directory, deleted everything in the windowstemp directory, and I killed Find Fast. Then Word opened normally. In order to try to determine more exactly what it was, I put everything back into the add-ins and temp directories, and Word still opens correctly. So I'm wondering if something with the Fast Find index was causing a problem for me.

Glad you got it fixed, Brian. Don't you hate it when you don't know what caused it. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> But DO delete everything in the temp directory. You should do that on a regualar basis after you close all applications & after crashes. That's one of the primary causes of problems.
