My desktop icons don't stay put

I carefully space my desktop icons to match the pictures on the tiled background. It has worked well for years. Recently I added a new desktop folder and carefully placed it to line up with the others. However, every time I boot up it is down at the bottom of the left hand desktop column. All the other icons remain in their carefully-spaced places.

I added another folder last week and it now starts the day in the spot that Network Neighbourhood has occupied since my PC was new. Network Neighbourhood now gets squeezed into the bottom of the screen.

What is happening? Is this the same reason that Windows Explorer no longer remembers that I like it to open up with View|Details and to be just so wide and so high. It has got so tedious that I bought Super Explorer for cash from http://www.galcott.com. This does everything Windows Explorer does, it allows multiple windows in an MDI interface (remember File Manager?) and it remembers my preferences as well.

Any help will be appreciated.

Do you have Auto Arrange turned on?
Right click the desk top and check that under 'Arrange Icons' that there is a check mark on the line 'Auto Arrange', if so remove it.

Thanks, Dave, but I don't have Auto Arrange turned on. I just re-checked. Do you have any idea where W95 stores the info about what icon goes where? I searched the registry for the name of one of the folders on my desktop, without success.

After rereading your post, are you saying that ONLY ONE icon will move?

If so, just where is it that you are wanting it to be located?

Also you stated you installed a NEW desk top, what is it?

Re: My desktop icons don't stay put

Hi, DaveA. Thanks for the interest in my problem.

It used to be I would add an icon (maybe a shortcut to a utility, maybe a new folder) to my desktop and carefully position it to match the tiled background (a small photo of my little boy). It used to be that I could reboot and find the new icon in the same exact place I had carefully put it the day before.

Now, since unremembered months ago (6?, 7?, 8?), all recent carefully-positioned icons re-appear in apparently random places when I reboot. I try puttting them back where they belong, reboot and they are back in their W95-specified places.

The carefully-positioned icons I have had for ages, since I first set up this PC, always re-appear exactly where I put them: it is only the ones I have added since 6/7/8 months ago that never remember their place.

To answer your other specific question: I haven't installed a new desktop. I'm not quite sure what that actually means because the desktop is not an installable feature. However, I haven't changed the background (wallpaper) or any other Properties of the desktop in living memory (except the Settings which I routinely change whenever I attach my PC to our VGA projector).

Your interest is appreciated, and any help will be gratefully received.

How MANY icons do you have on your desktop?

I have seen where after awhile the icons will start doing weird things when the desktop is splattered with icons. The best is to keep this down to as few as posible. I put the office tool bar and the Quick launch bar to use. I NEVER link to a data file from any of these or the desktop, only programs.

Many thanks for the pointer to EzDesk. I have succeeded in downloading it and will try it out next.

If I understood your profile then this site is your design. I wish I could shake your hand. Particularly for the spell checker. That's a great idea for those of us who type badly.

Best regards
John.

PS You commented that EzDesk is "It's old but it still works like a charm." I look forward to having that as my own requiem!

DaveA: I take your point about having a lot of icons. I have about 25 or 30. However, I have downloaded a copy of EzDesk at someone else's suggestion on the basis of curing the symptom, if not the underlying disease.

Thanks again for interest. I hope EzDesk will answer all my needs.

Yup I'm the board architect. I actually started up the original website - "old but... still works like a charm" most definitely applies to me.

I love wwwthreads, the software the Lounge is based on, and hacking extra features into it is one of my favorite obsessions. Have you tried the external SpellChecker.Net? It works whatever language you are using!

Let us know how you get on with EzDesk.

Re: My desktop icons don't stay put

Hi,

EzDesk worked fine for me. However, it is taking an aspirin to cure a headache and not curing the underlying disease. Bill Gates' greatest skill is knowing to a nicety just how many bugs he can leave in his software and still sell it.

By the way, I think there is the smallest trace of insectivorous behaviour (I stole that phrase from a Watch newsletter) in your first posting to me when you included a link to qualityimage.com. There is an extra piece of html at the end, namely "
". The link looks like this:

http://www.qualityimage.com/Downloads20/EzDesk18.html

Naturally IE couldn't find the page until I deleted the offending characters.

In the e-mail that notified me of your reply, the link was correct.

If I haven't been very clear, please write back.
Good luck with the lounge.
John

You need Melissa Nguyen's EzDesk. It's old but it still works like a charm.

Oops, sorry - the line had accidently wrapped and the converter had changed the resulting newline mark to HTML code, ie < br>.

Hi John. I have solved the same problem of icons 'wakeing up' in a different place than I left them in the following manner, with 'Windows 95 Plus', (from memory, adjust as needed John)
1) Drag 'em where you want 'em, (icons that is)
2) Start, Settings, Control Panel, Desktop Themes.
3) Save As..., "Give it a New Name", OK.
4) Start, Shutdown, Restart with your fingers crossed.
Please let Us know if this solves your sleep walking icons.
Happy New Year, Michael.

Another solution:

Go to http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/sw...ml?fcode=000OCS and download tidy 95.

This is a great utility & works in Win98. I've used it for years & would have thrown my computer out the window many times, had it not been for this program. You can save multiple configurations of desktop icons at different resolutions & restore them at will.

Hope this helps.
