Can I avoid reboot? (Word 97)

    Hi,
When Word97 bombs, it not only loses my data but then tells me that I can't access the file because I'm using it. To regain access, I have to reboot. I am thinking that if I could erase its reminder, I could at least avoid the reboot.
    Any ideas?
    TIA Al Gruber

Open the Task Manager and End Process for any WINWORD.EXE in the list.

Also check in the directory that the file is sitting in. If there are any ~name.doc files remaining there you may be able to delete these to regain control of the file.

Althought I hesitate to suggest that you give Bill even more money, I think this is really a case when an upgrade to Word 2002/XP would assist you -- it is considerably more reliable than Word 97, and does a much better job of recovery, should it fail. Best used on Windows 2000 Pro or on XP.

Re: Can I avoid reboot? (Word 97)

    Hi Al:
When you open a document, Word creates an owner file ~$Filename.doc. These files tell Word that the file is in use, so anyone else trying to access the file on a network can't modify the file at that time. When Word crashes, it often leaves these files behind. If you haven't gotten rid of temp files in a long time, you should. See the first step in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.
    Cheers,
