    Lost Product Key

Not a month old and already I've misplaced my Product Key for Windows XP Home Edition. The CD came with the Dell computer, so I can't ask Windows. Dell said they would be guilty of breaking some kind of rule if they helped me.

Some time ago I read a post that said it could be found in the Registry, but durn if I can remember where I saw it.

Will some kind, generous soul help me out with this?

The product key is not stored in a directly recognizable way in the registry. There is a freeware utility named KeyFinder that claims to retrieve the product key; I haven't tested it myself.

Isn't this the code on the sticker on the computer itself? Dell used to give you a booklet with the certificate, but I think now it's stuck onto the box somewhere. Inconveniently for laptop users, it's on the bottom. For desktops, I'm not sure.

Second reference I've run into this week for Magical Jelly Beans! Anyway FYI I just ran keyfinder on my XP Home setup and it indeed returned the correct key.

They wouldn't put that number on the outside of the box, it would be too easy for others to see and copy. This came on the cardboard envelope that held the CD.

    Re: Lost Product Key

There are about 5 other key finders in addition to Jelly Beans , because a lot of people have reported for whatever reason (not the makers for sure)-- viruses and bugs in the download--not all but a significant number. I use view key xp which is Viewkey XP or Magical Jellybean Keyfinder download here and Aida32 will do this also.

I know it's bolted stable door time, but <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16> - when you do sort out the key - write the number on the CD with a magic marker. HTH

I guess that's why it's on the bottom of the laptop.... anyway, good luck in your quest.

    Re: Lost Product Key

You need the correct CD to go with the key code. The different OEMs CDs may not work with another OEM's key code. There are many different types of Windows XP CDs and each have a different type of key code.

I have a 5 license cd with 5 different key codes. None of these will work with a "Retail" CD and nor will the Retail key code work with the CD I have for my site license. Also you will find that the Retail upgrade numbers will not work with the New clean CD's. Like wise the Pro and Home are different.

Unless you know the coding, you will not know what type of CD is needed with a aquired key code.

    Re: Lost Product Key

If you have a copy of AIDA32, it will give you the Product Key in plain text format. Look under Operating System>License Information>Product Key.
If you don't have a copy you can get it at Aida32.
Even if you don't need it for that info, Aida will give you all you ever wanted to know about your system. ( but were afraid to ask ) <img src=/S/cloud9.gif border=0 alt=cloud9 width=25 height=23>

    Re: Lost Product Key

Aida's great, and will give you the product key and a terrific amount of info that will send a lot of people scrambling to find out what it means--also Protected Storage Pass View by Nir Sofer v.1.51 will extract most of your passwords, as well as software license numbers and product keys when you click it's icon--and adds another registry icon in a delightul shade of not quite shocking pink that you can sprinkle around your desktop. Also see Planet Jeffery.

But if you're loading the OS, and you have misplaced your Product Key, and haven't printed it or written it somewhere, you're out of luck--happened to me once for a day, and that's when I learned to put the needed number on every software CD as Kaplinb suggested.

    Re: Lost Product Key

Google lead me to that one which I installed. It found 2 keys, the one I lost and one for Office XP that I didn't need.

The Office one was correct, so I assume that the one for Windows XP Home Edition is the correct one. I haven't tried the recovered key but you can bet your last dollar that I have the numbers on a floppy disk and written down all over my office.

    Thanks for the info.

Dave, please don't tell me that I have to buy another CD. Is that what you're trying to tell me?

OK. I'm installing Aida32 right now. So many people have said that it's a great program
I downloaded but never installed. What I was waiting for, I'll never know.

I'll be back to let the board know if what I get from Aida is the correct key.
