    IE for Win 95 (Any)

I'm passing this on from a relative who needs to upgrade to a higher version of IE. He has 4.0 on an older P100 (maybe 32MB RAM) running Win 95. He's told by his bank that he now needs IE5.5 or better to use their secured site. I've found a site with a 70+ MB download for this. Will it work on such an underpowered box with 95?

    thanks

    Alan

BTW, they also said Netscape 6 would be OK. Any info/ comments on that one wrt the above?

The attached will answer your question. If you want to go for IE, you may even be able to think about IE 6.1. If you want to go for Netscape, I strongly recommend you go for Mozilla - preferably in the form of Mozilla Firebird 0.6.1 - which is backwards compatible with Netscape 6 and fully installs (from a zip file) after a 6.9 Mb download.

Many thanks for the info. I found another (ftp) download of 5.5, with the same info in the readme. I understand that Firebird is the browser only, and Thunderbird is the mail client. ATM he has NS 4.7x and needs his mail. How would some combination of these go? (probably in the wrong part of the lounge by now!)

I think he only has a 1.8GB HD too!

Thunderbird is indeed the mail client and is now at version 0.1 - a 9.1 Mb download. It should seamlessly recognise NS 4.7x mail. (It also has Bayesian spam filtering - which (effectively) intelligently interprets existing rules.)
