Attendance - Whats the best way ? (A2k)

Any idea's on how best to approach this would be welcome.
I'm starting the project of Employee Attendance. I've started a basic layout as attached but this already is causing me a problem.
The attached shows a Tabular form, which as you can see the calculations are incorrect, I've also tried a subform method which again, carries the new calculation to the rest of the fields also.
If I can ask............ Which would be the best method as a starting point so individual toals can be achieved.

My preferred method would be a combo on the main form to select the Employee, then a subform linked to enter the data.

What is it you need help on, Dave? Are you asking about the calculation, how to get individual totals, or what?

Dave,

Perhaps the attached database will give you some ideas.

Perfect
Just the starting point I needed.
p.s
I started playing with the Courtesy Car Planner last night and this would integrate nicely.
I have populated the Toggle's with the staff, with a bit of playing with the code, I can have a visual display of attendance also.

Yes, the planner form can be used for employee attendance too; its design is very general.

I understand that the issue is that if Duration is an unbound textbox then whatever value is in the original record will carry over all the way down a continuous form.
If that is correct is there a way around it, or do you have to create another field in your table, bind the textbox to that and store the calculated data in that field (Which if I understood correctly that is what Hans did). I think that goes against the regular rules of normalization that you do not store calculated results.
Thanks for the insights.

Hi Zave,

I always warn people in this forum against storing calculated information in a table, so it would be bad form for me to violate my own recommendation!

So I don't store the duration in a table. Instead, I created a query that calculates Duration, and bound the txtDuration text box to this calculated field. Each time the form is opened, or the data are updated, the Duration field is recalculated.

thanks for the explanation.
However, the bottom line is that on a continous form an unbound textbox will show the same value straight through the form? That is something I realized, and I want to ascertain that it is correct.

Re: Attendance - Whats the best way ? (A2k)

You are more or less correct.

In a continuous form, there is only one set of controls, even though it looks as if each displayed record has its own set. The only things that vary from record to record are values that are directly related to the contents of the record. This may be the value of a field, or a calculated value based on a field or fields of the record, or (in Access 2000 and up) conditional formatting. Everything else will be repeated in every displayed record.
