    File permissions (SP1)

After moving from Windows NT 4.0 to XP, we have noticed problems with file permissions. Notably, users have encountered errors when trying to delete files on their home network drive, receiving error messages that the files were in use by another user or program (when the users were relatively certain they should not have been). Also, users have opened files in Microsoft Word and Excel, only to have them come up in Read-Only mode (when the read-only file attribute was not set). Has anyone else encountered this?

Assign user profiles to Power Users rather than Users group.

I am told that our users are assigned to a domain, so this is not applicable.

Unless the permissions have changed on those folders, it's hard to understand why the users are having these issues. I don't understand how a change of OS on the user end is going to make any difference. Then again, I don't do server administration any more so I'm completely unaware of what havoc XP might be causing. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

    Re: File permissions (SP1)

There has been no change on the folder permissions. In fact, we have done a gradual upgrade, so we have users on both platforms (XP and NT4). The NT4 users do not have these problems. The only real clue we have is that these problems seem to be limited to Microsoft Word and Excel files (Office 2000).

My first instinct was that the users had opened the file(s) in question earlier in the session, and that somehow, a temporary file was being held. However, deleting temporary files does not resolve the situation. Neither does doing a shutdown and restart on the user's PC. At times, the files have not been accessed for several days prior to the incident. And in practically all cases, the files are in the user's personal network folder, which is restricted to only the user and network administrators; therefore, the files are not being accessed by another user.

In the cases where users could not delete files in Windows Explorer, the files could be deleted using Command Prompt.
