opening prn files File conversion dialog appears? (WordXP)

    Hi

Via WordXP - I'm opening .prn(printer files) ie goto Word menu >Open>navigate to the file & Open.
A dialog box appears about File Conversion.

When I'm in Word97 & I open the .prn files using the same method - no dialog box is displayed & it just opens the file for me to edit.

Is there a way I can remove this File Conversion dialog box in WordXP - would this be a setting within WordXP? or would it be at the stage of installing Word & its an option?

    many thanks Diana

    Hi Diana:
I'm not sure about Word 2002, but in Word 2000, the options is under Tools/Options/General.
    Cheers,

    Hi Diana:
Hmmm, not sure. I don't have 2002 to check. When I uncheck the conversions box in Word 2000, I can open a .prn file in Word without a confirming dialog box. Of course, it contains printer codes...but it does open. I tested it on a .prn file that I made from Word. I should think that it would still work that way in 2002. Maybe if you reboot & then try it...or try checking the option, opening the file, closing it & then repeat with the option unchecked.

    Hi Phil

In WordXP When I turnen the optino off & restarted Word that did the trick.
If I turn the option on & then close & restart Word I get a different File Conversion dialog box all together?

That's the box that I get. Sometimes you have to exit Word before changing an option takes effect. Nothing scientific about it...just temperament. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
