    Notepad Popups (Outlook 2000)

    In WOW 8.31, Woody wrote about a way for a notepad message to pop up when an HTML message is viewed in the preview pane. I'd like to use this technique as an object lesson to our users who refuse to turn off the preview pane, but I'm not an HTML person so I'm not able to figure out how to do that. Could someone help?

    <UL><LI>In Outlook Tools|Options|Mail Format, make sure that HTML is selected as "Send in this message format".<LI>Choose File|New|Mail Message. Put your own name in the "To" box. (If you have only one email account, you may have to send it to a colleague at a machine next door - depending on the mail configuration.) <LI>Go to http://www.computerbytesman.com/secu...epadpopups.htm in the browser of your choice.<LI>Click anywhere in the webpage. Press Ctrl + A to highlight the entire page. (Please note that, as I am writing this, a large number of sites are inaccessible. I am thus unable to check whether you need to copy the entire page or not. If you only need to copy part of the page, then simply highlight the indicated part and proceed to the next step.)<LI>Press Ctrl + C to copy the entire page.<LI>Switch back to your blank email message and press Ctrl + V to paste the entire page into your email message.<LI>Click on Send and press F5 to make sure that the message has gone. (If you have a delivery error, readdress the message to a colleague.)<LI>Wait a minute or two and then press F5 again to check for incoming messages.<LI>Once the message is highlighted in the Preview Pane, you should get your Notepad pop-up.[/list]

    Thanks! But I guess I wasn't specific enough. I want to be able to create my own pop-up mesage.

    I emailed the author of the article and he told me how to do it.

    This is not really specific to the Preview Pane. As you know, the trick is this image tag (no, it doesn't work in the Lounge!):

    <img src=view-source:http://www.computerbytesman.com/security/npexample.txt width=1 height=1>

    Anyone can insert this tag into an Outlook HTML message using Insert>Picture and prefacing the URL with view-source:.

    Maybe people will use it to tell people "You're late to a meeting!" "Your dinner is getting cold." "Honey, we're taking the cat to the vet!" It's instant messaging if the user has the Preview Pane and automatic download and the timing is just right...

    Closing Preview Pane is no defense against this, except in the sense that the annoying message will not pop open until they open the message. In the case of spam, that would be a good thing.

    Since this is not a scripting attack, unless one suppresses images in the Restricted Zone, there appears to be no way to stop it. Bummer.
