Error message when opening Word (Word2000)

Sorry - don't know the service release # because I can't get into Word

It was working OK until recently, but for a few weeks, on trying to open Word I get an illegal operation message with the following in the Details:

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in
module VBE6.DLL at 017f:6504eaf1.

All other applications in Office2000 are working (Excel, Outlook etc) but not Word. I have tried to repair, uninstall and re-install, but nothing is fixing this.

I need to be able to do work for my office from home, so I need Word on my home computer.

This is driving me nuts - hope someone can help.

Thanks
Di

The following post by Phil should help you isolate the problem: <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (Word 97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (Word 97/2000)<!/post>

Re: Error message when opening Word (Word2000)

I've followed Phil's instructions step by step. However, opening Word using winword.exe /a is the only thing that works.

Renaming normal.dot as per step 2 hadn't fixed the problem. Nor id following Step 3 or Step 4.

As a temporary measure I've written a batch file for winword.exe /a which runs from a desktop shortcut - so I can at least create/open documents. However, it's a pain if I forget, and just click on a Word document from Windows Explorer or sent by email.

Any other suggestions? The release No. of my Win2000 is 9.0.2720

(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 22-Aug-03 14:09. to put in addendum)
Hi Di:
The /a switch allows you to start Word without loading the following components:

The global template (Normal.dot)
Any add-in templates in the Startup folder
Any add-in libraries (.wll files)
User settings stored in the Data key in the Windows registry

There are only a few things I can think of why Word would work from the command line with /a switch, but not when you follow the steps in the post.
1. An add-in is making some change to normal.dot to corrupt it. Try renaming normal.dot AND taking everything out of the startup folder...both startup folders. Then try to open a document. I'd also check to make sure that there's only one normal.dot on your computer.
2. One of the .wll libraries is corrupt. However, if you've reinstalled that shouldn't be the problem. You could search your computer for *.wll files. I notice that I have none, so they might be 3rd party add-ins.
3. There's a virus. If you haven't already, you should run an up to date virus scanner.

By the way, you should try rebooting your computer & make sure nothing is running except Explorer & systray (& your antivirus). Then try & open a document. This might tell you if there's a conflict with some other running program. I'd also do a scandisk & defrag on my hard drive.

Addendum: Just found this article that might apply. It documents problems with Winfax, Norton Antivirus 2000 or 2001 & also the VBE6.dll. If you don't have these programs, try renaming VBE6.dll to VBE6.olddll & then running a Repair.

Re: Error message when opening Word (Word2000)

Sorry it's taken three months to get back to this

I had to go away after posting my original query and was too busy to check back here after I got back, so just kept getting frustrated and starting Word with the /a switch.

Finally, this weekend it got too much for me and I came looking to see if there were any more suggestions since I'd been here last.

Phil, I'm delighted to report that the article you linked to did the trick - it was a problem caused by the WinFax template. (Now I think about it, the trouble started at the time I installed WinFax but I didn't make the connection).

Thanks very much for your help - removing that template removed the problem.

You're quite welcome. And thank you for posting back with the results. It's always nice to know what did & didn't work, especially for future reference.
