    windows critical update

Why does Windows Critical update keep coming and going in my system tray while it's downloading? It's extremely frustrating, as I never know how far through it's got. (I also find it annoying that once it's found an update, there's no way to tell it that you got fed up waiting for it and went and got it from windows update yourself - it still insists on downloading it! That's another story, though).

BTW, I'm assuming here that WCU works the same way across all windows platforms. Apologies if it doesn't - for the avoidance of doubt, I'm on w2k.

Try to customize Automatic Updates settings (Press Windows and Pause/Break keys simultaneously and click Automatic Updates tab).

    Nah.

First up, when I press Windows+Pause, I get the system properties box, which doesn't seem to have a link to automatic updates. Rather, that can be found in Control Panel.

Even so, that only gives me options like "ask before downloading, ask before install" through to "just do it automatically". But that's not the issue. It doesn't matter *how* I start the download going, once it's started AutomaticUpdates appears and disappears on a whim. I assumed that it only comes up when the CPU isn't busy, but sometimes it can take an awfully long time to appear (days, on some occasions!) even when I'm not doing anything else. Argh!

    Stuart--

In 2000 can you right click the systems tray/notification area>properties>taskbar>hide and then just go to Windows Update>Customize and display and download your updates from there?

I don't know if any of these links will help but some download issues are addressed at them:

Reregestering some files might help with the download problem and the quirky appearance, even if what it describes is not your exact problem--reregestering as it describes may help, and the KB adjustments may help.

I turn OFF the automatic update, and do it manually.
You will NEVER see that message again, but you MUST train yourself to go up and check for updates a lot. I, find my self checking daily, and sometimes, like now, I check several times a day.

I also do this with my AV software.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
