822925 = MS03-032 August 2003 Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer
823718 = MS03-033 MDAC 2.5. 2.6 and 2.7 Security Update

I've applied the first to an NT4SP6a and a Windows XP Pro SP1 box (I'm using the latter -- IE6 SP1 -- to type this!), with no problems.

The MDAC fix I've bypassed by installing MDAC 2.8, which doesn't have the vulnerability.

Is there something you want to tell us?? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Re: 2 new critical update (home, sp2)

I'm not having any, and depending on how you look at it, there were 4 security bulletins mailed from Technet security yesterday--one was an update to the other, and if you have Windows XP whether you would apply 2 or 3 of the 4 would depend on whether you already have Direct X9(--in which case it includes the patch or Direct X9(a) in which case you need it so that means there were two or three depending upon your Direct X version--they mailed 4 but one was an update within hours--they're topping themselves now--it used to be days before the update--now they've gotten to a few hours--can minutes be far behind?

3 Updates for August 20: MS03-33 for XP, MS03-32 for IE, MS03-30 for Direct X

I still feel you can wait some time with most of these unless they're urgent, because they take weeks to release and develop most of them. You're not going to get the indication you want within 24 hours of their release though I understand exactly why you want to know. It generally takes a few days for word to get around of a problem with the patch. If you download them, and now I think that Blaster and SOBIG's rapid spread are going to turn the tide from blowing them off in droves or just neglecting to putting them on a lot quicker, you can uninstall all but the Direct X patches--as far as the security hotfix patches go.

Thanks guys.
John: nope, nothing I know of, I haven't d/l'd them yet.<grin>..I was being cautious, did not want to rush to d/l'd them, only to find out there were problems <img src=/S/duck.gif border=0 alt=duck width=23 height=23>

SMBP: I am current on all but these 2. You say I can wait awhile, think I will ! <img src=/S/groovin.gif border=0 alt=groovin width=21 height=21>

Re: 2 new critical update (home, sp2)

On my computer (XP Home), 822925 disables the Index function in the Windows Help system (Help and Support Center), just as the earlier patch did. I had to uninstall to get the Index function back. This problem was the topic of an earlier thread in May.

Clearly Microsoft don't subscribe to Woody's Lounge!

I'm sorry for the tradeoff Chris, but the question is always the statistical incidence of the adverse side effects. I put in the update of 822925 the other day, and the index of Help and Support is intact in all the machines and no other problems are stemming from any of the patches I have in. I've only gotten rid of one since the XP launch--that's over 100.
