    slow connection

I have an XP machine plugged directly into a DSL modem via the USB and this PC also hooks into a 10/100 HUB. Next, I have a WIN98SE machine that plugs into the HUB. Problem is I can't get the two PC's to connect faster than 12MBS? Both network cards in each PC are capable of 100MBS. Any Thoughts? Thanks in Advance!

    Re: slow connection

You may need to check your bits (abbreviated with a small 'b') against your bytes (abbreviated with a big 'B')!

100 Mb/s (mega bits per second) gives you a maximum (theoretical) data transfer rate of about 10-12 MB/s (mega bytes per second), because there are 8 bits in a byte (no surprise there...!), and there will be some transmission overhead, to say nothing of the effect of Ethernet data collisions.

If you are really working in the same units, then my next question would be:
how have you measured the data transfer speed between the two PCs?

    Re: slow connection

Hi, I am measuring the connection speed by highlighting the connection on the XP machine which says how many bits have been transferred and the connection speed is 12Mbps....it's really odd because when I take the laptop home and connect to 2 other boxes at my house they all connect at 100Mbps...and all of the home boxes run Windows 98SE. Does this info better help? I'm just at a loss as to what's wrong and was reluctant to move to XP and now feeling a little worse for it.

    Re: slow connection

Are you noticing a slow connection or are you going by the connection state being listed.
SoBig.f is causing some congestion problems and Furo (www.lockergnome.com - Tech Specialist) noted an unidentified issue that appeared to be some soft of attack/hack on is IP address, so a reboot of your DSL may be in order.
