    customize style pane (2002 SP-1)

I really like using the Style and Formatting pane. It's made my life a lot easier. The one change I'd like to make to it has to do with the list of most recently used styles. If the pane is very narrow, you have two. If you widen it, you have three. There are five or six that I switch between the most, so I'd like to increase the number of recently used styles. Is this possible?

Is this the list under "Pick Formatting to Apply"?

The task pane cannot be docked "horizontally" above or below the document, which would make it quite wide, only on the left or right. But it can be made to free float over the document by double-clicking its title bar. You then can shape it as you like. When you double-click the title bar, it will again dock where it was. I believe (though I have not confirmed) that this setting will be saved and you can double-click back and forth. Whether this actually saves any work, I don't know. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Thanks for that. Interesting, but not quite what I'm hoping to do. I like it the pane where it is, but I'd like to modify it a bit. The very top of the list keeps track of the last three styles you've used. (I've included a screen shot in case I'm not being clear.)

I use a lot of different styles, but most of the time I'm only switching between five or six of them. If I could get the pane to list the last five or six styles used, instead of only three, I wouldn't have to scroll down the list very often at all.

By undocking the pane, as you suggested, I was able to make it very large, and it did list more styles. Unfortunately, at that point it was so large that I couldn't see much of my document, so no, it won't save me any effort.

I never use this pane, so I hadn't even noticed that it tracks the most recently applied styles. I'm afraid I have no idea how to manipulate a task pane. The VBA object model for the TaskPane collection and TaskPane object is painfully limited...
