    Grid (Excel 97 SR-2 (1))

I am trying to make a scaled template of my living room and living room furniture so I can see how things will fit before moving everything around. I'd like to create a grid (using Excel) and use the text box tool to make the furniture so I can move it all around on the grid. My question is, how do I make a grid with squares? I'd like each square to equal one inch. What should the row height and column width be to get exact squares? Or is there a better and easier way to go? Thanks!

Row heights are easy: they are expressed in points; 1 inch = 72 points, so set the row height to 72.
Column widths are more difficult: they are expressed as a number of characters in the font of the Normal style, and there is no straight conversion to points or inches. For the default Arial 10 points, a column width of 13 should be more or less right. You can test as follows: set the width of column A to 13. Press Alt+F11, then Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window in the Visual Basic Editor. Type

    ? Columns(1).Width

and press Enter. This will display the width in points. Unfortunately, Width is a read-only property, you can't set it. If it doesn't come out to 72, switch back to Excel and make the column narrower or wider as needed, and test Columns(1).Width again, until it's right.

Just to add my <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>. This seems like a job for PPT. Much easier to create a scaled grid there. I know - my spouse does it all the time.

I never thought about PPT -- I've only used it for charts and graphs, so I'm not sure how to go about making a grid. Can you give me some help on how to do this? Thanks!

I suggest you start a new thread by posting your question on the powerpoint page. You will probably get better suggestions than here in excel.

The OP has posted a follow-up question in PowerPoint, at the suggestion of sdckapr. To avoid duplication and confusion, I am locking this thread. All reactions to <post#=286952>post 286952</post#>, please.
