Outlook Filters Tutorial (OL 2000 and OLE)

     Loungers

Any one has found a nice Outlook Filters Tutorial?

I need to learn about effective filtering in Outlook, like my first thing is how do I make an Or, this condition or this condition, type filters?

All I can see is AND filtering...

    TIA

Dunno about a tutorial - a quick Google is as useful as mammaries on a bull (although the last link it presented was an eye opener ).

The only "OR" that I know relates to filters is with alternate values for a criteria. For example, if you want to filter for mail sent by A, B, C or D, you just enter them separated by commas. But that's about it. If you want to add the condition "OR category is X", you're out of luck, with "AND" assumed for you, as you've already discovered.

"Group by..." might qualify as a (very crude) workaround, depending on your needs, since it can separate (sort of "OR") according up to four criteria.

You may find something at Slipstick that improves on the basic Outlook capabilities, but it might cost you.

Unlikely to help directly, but the following threads on rules might give you some ideas, <!post=Outlook Rules with and/or,264950>Outlook Rules with and/or<!/post>, <!post=Message Rules,280768>Message Rules<!/post> and <!post=Rules logic,281015>Rules logic<!/post>.

You're either going to have to do some nifty footwork with categories or with hierarchical conditions. Other clients have or conditions, but not Outlook.

BTW what are you "OLE"ing with Outlook?

I some times find it very hard to understand how one MS application have so many bells and whistles but not that one you really care for.

What was going on at Outlook programming camp not to include such feature?

Thanks any way, I'll try to dig around and learn the work arounds.

As you probably realise, Outlook has always been "the caboose" when MS came to Great Internet Train Race; being built on top of an early Exchange front end. Outlook 2003 is the first version where I have come anyone wholeheartedly describing it as ready for prime time. One useful ingredient for "filtering" that I didn't mention is colouring - which you apply using View|Define Views|Modify|Automatic Formatting|Add and then saving that as a named Custom View.

Good point! And if colours are insufficient, you can use the other font variations too. It can get a bit messy, so it may pay you to create sample/test items to verify what you set up.
