Windows Explorer slows for large files

I've noticed that on at least one PC that if a directory contains a small number (2) of files which happen to be quite large (350Mb) that the hard disk stays active for an extended period (about 90 seconds). I experience similar behaviour if I (single) click one of the files after the directory is opened and the drive activity stopped. These files are on the local drive and are not shared, although the PC is networked.

I could understand this if I was opening a file, but am curious that it happens when all I want is the properties of that file.

Should I start looking for problems, or is this fairly normal for Win2000?

Thanks, although that refers specifically to copying large files and, as I read it, only to a domain controller.

My problem is when viewing a local directory with Windows Explorer. However it has prompted me to check the patch level on that box. I'll let you know what transpires.

Have you tried turning off file sharing to see if that helps? Sometimes when your Networked, opening files can be slower because its a shared resource.

Re: Windows Explorer slows for large files

Nup, just checked and this PC has no shares on the local drive.

The network consists of 40 Win2K client PC with 15 Win95/98 clients linked to 6 fileservers. Only two of the clients have shares, as I have been reluctant to setup shares in fear of viruses spreading.

Don't sweat this, I was asking mainly out of interest.

    Thanks.

Re: Windows Explorer slows for large files

As a footnote, in case anyone is following this. After restarting the PC I don't see any delay.

The sequence of events seems to be - listing a directory's content is quick regardless of size, create a new directory and copy a couple of large files to this and then the delay is noticable but only where the directory contains these large files (~300Mb).

That's my observation for the moment.

    Thanks,
    Granville
