Windows Explorer: not displaying CAB and ZIP files (XP any)

Is anyone aware of an option which would prevent the display of CAB and ZIP files (and possibly others?) in the left-hand pane of Windows Explorer? I would prefer to see just the folders/directories.

I can't find any setting in Tools => Folder Options => View, which is where I would expect it...

Installing WinZip and let it use Explorer Integration will prevent this most of the time.

A rather drastic measure is to disable XP support for ZIP and CAB: in the Run window, type

    regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

    and

    regsvr32 /u cabview.dll

If you want to re-enable it, use the same commands without /u.

Hmm. I'm not sure I like either of those suggestions!

Surely there should be a simpler/less drastic way?

The suggestions I posted were the ones I found in the newsgroups. The "native" XP way is to treat ZIP files like folders - you will have noticed that they are called "compressed (zipped) folders", not files. This functionality is provided by zipfldr.dll; I haven't found a way to tweak its behaviour. Let's hope that someone else has better suggestions.

    Hans

So in IBM terms, it is "performing as designed"! So it's unlikely there's a different way... Thanks!

Re: Windows Explorer: not displaying CAB and ZIP f

FWIW, I used the method you mentioned of turning off the Zip file display as "folders" quite some time ago and have never noticed any "negative" impact of that change. Of course, I do have WinZip installed and have no problem with Zip file activities or file associations. I really don't know if one does experience OS shortcomings if WinZip is not installed. The bottom line (for me) was the ungainly long list of "folders" when the feature was turned on.
