Different chapter numbering in same doc? (Word 2000)

Anyone know a way to do the following?:

In the main part of the document, the built-in Heading styles are used to produce numbered paragraphs. Heading 1 style produces 1, 2, 3 etc. (and Heading 2 produces 1.1, 1.2 etc.)
In the footer, the page number is shown using chapter numbering linked to the Heading 1 style. So the page number may display like "1-1", "1-2", "2-1" etc., based on whatever is the current Heading 1 number in the text on that page.

Now, in the same document, there needs to be an appendix section, which is going to use numbered paragraphs in a manner similar to the main section of the document, however in the appendix section, the numbered paragraphs are like this: first level: A, B, C etc.; second level: A.1, B.1 etc. In order to produce these numbered paragraphs, clearly it's necessary to create new custom styles, since the Heading styles are already taken.
However, it's also necessary to have 'chapter page numbering' in the footers in the appendix section, so that the page numbers will display like "A-1", "A-2", "B-1".

Has anyone ever come up with a workaround to enable all this to happen, in the same document?

Thanks,
Gary

(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 22-Aug-03 11:44. for addendum)
Hi Gary:
If you use Headings 1-4 or 1-5 for your main document & the other headings for your appendix, you can do it. The appendix goes in a separate section. When you format your page numbers for the first section, I assume you checked the box for include Chapter numbers. You'll notice that there is a dropdown box next to "Chapters start with...". In the main document, I assume you picked Heading one. For the appendix, you'll then pick Heading 5 or 6. There's a KB Article 212173.

Addendum: In case all your headings are used (I know how attorney's can be ), there's an article on mulitple page numbers.
Hope this helps,

Gary, I often have the same situation. I use two different SEQUENCE fields, as well as creating two styles Appendix Heading 1 and Appendix Heading 2. and then I use these styles to generate an inline TOC for the Appendices. You have to restart the Second sequence everytime you have a new Appendix Heading 1, but that is just done with a switch in the SEQUENCE field. HTH

Phil, Ron:

Thanks very much for the tips and the links.

Currently the main part of the document, and the appendix, are kept in separate documents, and in each document, the styles Heading 1 - 5 are associated with numbering (should have mentioned that in my initial post). I was looking for a workaround, but it did occur to me too that maybe it would be easiest to just convince the users to give up the fifth level of number for one of the outlines - that should permit say Heading 1 - 5 to be used for numbering in the main part of the document, and Heading 6 - 9 to be used in the Appendix.

If that idea doesn't fly, then I'll look into the use of Seq fields; thanks again for the tips.

Sorry for getting around to viewing your post so late. Some months back I designed a template that does what you asked for. I've attached the .doc version for you. It uses Headings 1-5 for the chapters and Headings 6-9 for the appendices.
