contents of inbox has dissappeared (outlook 2000)

the inbox of the email we use for our database department has cleared itself out. The strange thing is that the size of the .pst file would indicate that the old email is still there but we can't see it. The .pst file size is 1.2 GB. We can send, and get mail. I compacted the .pst file and this did not help. I have a backup but the file size is the same.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Check View|Current View and see if you have some kind of filter on.

Try running scanpst.exe (a.k.a the Inbox Repair Tool) on the PST. On my Win 2000 machine, this is located in Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMapi1033NT.

The size of the PST file will NOT decrease when your delete some files. You must run "Compact now" from the properties pane.

Select the top level of the "Outlook Folders list", right click, select properties.
On the "General" tab, select Advanced, and then the "Compact now" button.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
