    W98 & Media Player

Any ideas on why Windows Media Player V9.0 stops recording music from a CD when it reaches 1% or 2% completion of the first track?

Is the source a "Protected" CD, i.e., marked DoNOT copy or using a computer on the box or CD?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Are you on Win 98 or Win 98 SE? I'm stuck with the first edition, and I have found just this problem trying to record from a CD with a number of different programs. For instance, the new Real One player, or the Musicmatch jukebox. I suspect that the latest versions of these need at least Win 98 SE to work reliably. I uninstalled Real One and reverted to the older Real Jukebox and Real Player (which are still available from their site) and all is well.

Actually it's a friend's computer, and he is running W98 -- not SE. The curious thing is that he has two computers, one desktop and one laptop. He downloaded and installed Media Player V9.0 on both machnes. The desktop works just fine. The laptop hangs up when copying the same CD that worked OK on the desktop.

Needless to say, it's got us both wondering what the problem could be.
