    World Domination Program

In the current issue of WWW, "Rose Vines" highly recommends that users of Internet Explorer 5.01 or older download and install the Service Pack 2.

I exited Netscape, fired up my copy of IE 5.0, went to "Windows Update" and installed the Service Pack "from the web" using IE. Install went fine. Everything works, except...

...The title bar identifies the Program as "Microsoft World Domination Program". No kidding. No matter which
site I load, the title bar format is "[page title as defined by the <title> tag - Microsoft World Domination
Program". For example, on this page, my title bar displays "Post a New Message - Forum (Internet Explorer) - Microsoft World Domination Program".

My suspicions are that Microsoft did not put it there.<g> I have no idea whether the program is otherwise
    dangerous or not.

    Has anyone heard about this?

I haven't gotten a response and, as much fun as it is having the program named so aptly, I'm little nervous that there is a more nefarious problem lurking beneath the name.

In case people think I'm kidding -- it is April Fools Day -- here is a screen shot.

Maybe this is MS' idea of a joke. I loaded SP2 on Friday, and it doesn't have that name. Here's my About dialog:

I can't explain how the title was changed. Certainly had to be a joke of somekind. I doubt it's a virus because that change is only to a registry key. You can easily change it by searching the registry for "World Domination Program" then setting the offending key to whatever text you want displayed instead.

I searched my registry for "Microsoft Internet Explorer" (which is what my IE window says after the title of the website), but I think it's a default value and isn't stored in the registry. Good luck! <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>

Thanks. It was a regisry setting. Actually, I kind of like it. I was just concerned that there may be real problems lurking beneath the surface. I suppose it was some MS employee's idea of an April Fool's joke. Too bad they didn't get to see the look on my face!

Evidently an April Fool's joke that they were saving for Sunday. Hey! I fell for it!

I do NOT think it was MS that did this to you. You may have gotten it from any program that you had downloaded. Some programs will add things to IE even though you are NOT using it.

Did you get the service pack from a MS site or from another, if so where?

    Re: World Domination Program

I installed from the MS site using IE 5.0. It did not appear in IE 5 (before the update). It did appear the first time I launched IE 5.01 (after the update). The only thing I did between installing the service pack (using the default configured IE 5) and launching the updated IE 5.01 (with the change) is restart windows (part of the service pack install routine). The first time I launched the updated 5.01, it took me to the MSN site to a page titled "Welcome to Internet Explorer - Microsoft World Domination Program". Had to be Microsoft (unless someone hacked into their download servers).

Nah. Assuming it is not dangerous, I appreciated the joke.
