Error opening file in XP (2002)

(Edited by HansV to make MSKB article clickable)

A file was created in XL97, saved as 95/97. We are trying to open in XL2002 but it hangs up. If I kill the task, Excel claims to have repaired the file, but only data sheets are intact. Chart sheets are blank.

There are no macros therefore <!mskb=287105>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 287105<!/mskb> does not apply. The original still opens in 97. The CPU remains pegged forever.

If you can still open it in Excel 97, try saving it as a standard 97 workbook instead of the mixed 95/97 format. Then see if you can open that in Excel 2002.

I haven't heard of any specific problems with opening Excel 97 workbooks in Excel 2002.

What happens if you use Excel 97 to copy the data to a fresh workbook? Can you open that in Excel 2002?

Re: Error opening file in XP (2002)

I opened the file, saved as Excel Workbook (eliminating the 95/97 format). I Inserted a new worksheet. I copied the entire contentes of the offending worksheet and used paste special to put the contents onto the new worksheet, formula first, then formating. I then deleted the offending worksheet.

I found the offending worksheet by copying them to a new workbook one at a time, opening in Office XP after each copy, until it failed to open. I believe we only have one user with this issue, but he has many offending workbooks.

Some days I love MS Office, some days I hate M$ Office.

    Thanks for your hel
