    Common Dialog

Is there a way to get the Common Dialog box to open with entries sorted alphabetically? On my system, W2k SP4, it always opens in "List" mode, and the entries are not sorted alphabetically (perhaps the last saved file is the last on the list, and the last used folder first - not certain about that). I have to change the mode to "Details", then click on the column heading to sort. I've searched the MS KB, and Google, but haven't found a solution. I've looked through the registry, but couldn't find any entry that I recognised as dealing with this Common Dialog Box. Is a new registry entry the answer? I don't have the expertise to know where to place such, if that is the answer.
All suggestions will be gratefully received.
    TIA

You should be able to fix the sort order as follows, but it may be too drastic:

    Open Windows Explorer
Select View | Arrange Icons By | Name
Then select Tools | Folder Options...
    Activate the View tab
    Apply to All Folders.

By the way, you don't need to switch to Details view to sort; if you right click an empty part of the files list, you can select Arrange Icons By | Name.

    Lionel--

I was trying to find out, but couldn't confirm if this feature is in Win 2000--it's in XP. In any folder, go to View>Arrange Icons By>Clilck Show in Groups.

See Post 274254:Show in Groups XP.

In any view except Filmstrip and List, this feature superimposes headings and that's the organizational and convenience beauty of it. It makes the window look like an index. You can sort by name, size, type, modified. Name is alphabetical by letter and great for retrieval of files--saves a lot of time. Size gives you headings Tiny, Medium, Small, Folders. Dates gives Yesterday, Last Week, Earlier This Month. It makes hunting down icons in crowded folders much easier. If you do it in Explorer, then you can confer this on all the folders at once. Then if you come across a folder you'd rather organize according to date, or size or last updated (I use last updated for my downloads folder because it's convenient to access my downloads and organize them that way--I can switch to alphabetical or whatver in one click) you can "customize it" to your preference. You can always go back to what you had with a couple clicks.

This has saved me an awful lot of time, and if you have a lot of files and folders, it can make a big difference. I rarely have to search for a file I managed to lose by getting "mouse clumsy" and dragging to the wrong place.
