Word XP 2000 Bloat (XP)

Word XP !!!!!!!

How's this for crazy:

We have standard one page documents created in Word 2000. They are 66kB in size. When we open them in Word XP, and save them, they grow to 465 kB!!!

When we open these in Word 2000 and save them, the file size magically becomes over 2MB (2,000 kB !!)

We have found a workaround, however inadequate, by "Saving As" an earlier version, OR by disabling features after Word 97 in the XP dialog box.

Both woefully inadequate on a network of 100 computers, with a mix of Word versions, and potentially thousands of these 1 page documents.

Has Microsft got an (adequate) answer?

Who knows!

You do have Fast Saves turned off in all versions, I hope? (Tools | Options..., Save tab)

Can you post a little sample? (under 100K please!) Just checking to see if there might be anything "special" about it.

Yes, fast saves is always turned off.

Another problem; we have a text box and a graphic in the Header. When the file is saved as Word 2.X, the text box disappears!

The document you attached is 66 KB. When I open it in Word 2002, then save it, it goes to 65 KB, not 465 KB . I didn't change anything about the compatibility options. The only options I can find to bloat the document are 1) Include preview picture (in File | Properties) and 2) Include TrueType fonts (Tools | Options...), but neither of them was "on" in the document as attached.

I have no more clues.

Perplexed!

Could someone try opening the file in an earlier version of Word, and see what file size results?

Thanks

Re: Word XP 2000 Bloat (XP)

If you open the document using the Recover Text from Any File filter, you find strings such as:

Photoshop 3.0
File written by Adobe Photoshop 5.0

(It appears twice because both the first page header and the regular header contain a graphic.)

If you select the drawing, copy, and Edit>Paste Special as Picture, those notations are lost. This suggests that some kind of behind-the-scenes OLE thing is happening, for example, sucking in large quantities of Photoshop code.

Does the "picture" version (attached hastily created sample) work any better for you?

That seems to fix it.

Thanks.

That was pretty cool. Do you by any chance know of any books/articles that talk about "behind the scenes OLE things" which go on in Word?

Thanks...

Not that I can think of. The Word document format is proprietary and can only be obtained under a nondisclosure agreement. What I've picked up about the quirks of embedded objects mostly was from the school of hard knocks.
