Catching Up with Updates (WinXP Home)

I have been helping a friend learn to use her computer and I discovered the other day that she had installed very few, if any, of the Critical Windows Updates that have come out over the last 4 months or so. She has a dial-up connection and a full update would seem to take a very very long time. So I went home and downloaded the SP1 update file over my cable conneciton and put it on a CD and installed it at her house this morning. Now she still is missing 38 MB of Critical updates! Is there any way I can get those on my computer and put them on a CD and then update her computer?

    Thanks, Bill

    On your friends computer
Go to the windows update site
Get a list of all the updates it wants to download
Print or write down this list

    On your computer
Go to the windows update site
    Click "Personalise Windows Update"
Select "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog "
    Save Settings
    Click "Windows Update Catalog"
Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems
Select the correct operating system for your friends computer
Select and download all the updates that your friends computer needs
Copy all these updates to a CD

    On your friends computer again
Load the CD and install the updates

Unfortunately I don't know an easy way to chain the updates so they all get installed at once.

    Bill,
See my post: <post#=288605>post 288605</post#> about installing multiple hotfixes at once.

Re: Catching Up with Updates (WinXP Home)

That procedure worked fine! I did get 4 more HotFixes that were not in the list that I copied on my friend's computer this morning. Also, there were several others in the list that I feel pretty certain do not apply to this computer, like some .NET updates and a couple of others. If those are really needed they can be downloaded live on her computer. With reference to the 4 extra HotFixes, do you know if it hurts to have some in my download set that are not actually needed? I need to read the KB articles that have been referenced before I do anything and that may answer my questions.

    Thanks, Bill

Thanks for the link Joe. That will be a big help in this process. I haven't thoroughly read the KB articles involved yet but I will before I go back and install these HotFixes.

    Thanks, Bill

    Bill--

Extra updates in your download set not needed won't hurt--they won't impact anything unless actually installed.

Re: Catching Up with Updates (WinXP Home)

Thanks for that reassurance. I still have to read the related Knowledgebase articles thoroughly but the part that I did read indicated that the way to install all these updates at once is to build a batch file that will execute each one. I've noticed that the downloaded files are buried deep in a directory structure that would appear to be designed for some other updating method. Each HotFix is located in a separate folder several levels deep in the folder tree; not a very nice arrangement for use in a batch file! I'm wondering if I can't go get each HotFix file and copy or move it to a common folder to make the batch file easier to build. Do you (or any of the others) have any suggestions on this part of the process?

    Thanks, Bill

I don't have any suggestions, but I have noticed that Microsoft also provides an XML file that describes what was downloaded. I'm sure there must be a way to parse this and install all the patches. That was what I meant when I said "I don't know an easy way to chain the updates so they all get installed at once"

Yes, what is visible after the download is the XML file and the top level folder in the folder tree. Is there some way to look at the contents of an XML file? I've been aware that something called XML existed for a good while but I don't know anything about it and when I double-clicked it I got an error message.

You can open the XML file with any text editor, if you open it with Internet Explorer then it will colour code the tags to make it easier to read

OK, that does work. I guess the default application for the XML file type is just not set right yet.

    Thanks, Bill
