Word Not Deleting Temp Files From Startup (Word 2002)

Hi. We're running Word 2002 on Windows XP, using crogram filesmicrosoft officeoffice10startup as our Word startup folder.

Whenever Word crashes - whether intentionally (via Microsoft Office Tools) or otherwise - the temp files in startup don't get deleted. Opening and closing Word afterwards never deletes these temp files (I can tell they're the same ones because the modification date & time match the date/time of the crash).

This doesn't seem to be causing any problems, but I don't want to assume that will always be the case...

Any suggestions on what may be causing this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Bob

Are these the files that look like ~$xxxxxx.dot?

I think Word will just re-create those "owner" files the next time you start up, so I'm not sure it's a problem.

Or is it another type of temp file?

I think this is "normal" behavior. Word creates some temporary files with names that vary, such as ~DF6641.tmp. When the program crashes, the connection between Word and these files is broken; next time it create temporary files with other names. It is advisable to clean up these orphaned temp files from time to time.

These are owner files like "~$MyStartupTemplate.dot", not temp files like ~DFxxxx.tmp. Sorry for the confusion.

I thought Word deleted all such owner files on the next successful start & close of Word, but I could be wrong.

I don't really pay attention. If I crash Word today, I'll check. Hopefully I won't get back to you.

Hi Bob:
Word crashes always leave temp files lying around. For a method of deleting them, see the first step in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.
Cheers,

Thank you all for responding.

Guess I'll just have to stop crashing Word! and be more diligent about deleting temp files.
